The brain seeks patterns - addictions provide easy, comfortable (often pleasurable) patterns that feed this need. We (as a species) have a lot of trouble with change, particularly on an individual level. Mix this with the ability of our minds to rationalise pretty much ANYTHING and voila! - You find yourself stuck in a rut that you just can't motivate yourself out of.
Hypothetically speaking, the key would be to provide for your hungry little brain a more enticing pattern that feeds the same basic desire you achieve from surfing the web. Unfortunately, most web-addicts find themselves trawling page after page for one thing - communication. The only way to achieve satisfactory communication in the 'real' world is of course, to break out of your comfort zone and approach new people, go new places etc.. etc.. - which of course presents an issue with the paranoid, change-hating human mind.
To take it a little further, I think the key here is long-term thinking. Addictions are most easily formed during our teens and young adult lives - presumably, this has something to do with our 'long term thinking' section of the brain being under-developed and new to the 'think ahead' game.
If you can wrestle your sub-concious into believing there will be a big payoff in the long run for the traumatic shakeup to it's current habits - perhaps that would be enough to break the cycle. Is internet addiction a sign of poor self control ?if so how can will power be improved (hypothetically)?
I used to a pretty heavy online gamer, i'm talking 18 hours on weekends/days off.
I think the easiest way to help yourself is find other things to do, a new hobby, hang out with friends, whatever.
You may be able to improve your will power (like me trying not to hit snooze everyday), but if you're bored all the time, and have nothing to do, you'll quickly find yourself web surfing again. Is internet addiction a sign of poor self control ?if so how can will power be improved (hypothetically)?
Any kind of addiction is pure lack of self control. You have to be strong minded to use your will power.
